Ordering quality bifolds is crucial if you want them to be reliable and secure. But that’s only part of the process. When we install bifold doors, it’s important they fit into the frame, which is why taking accurate measurements during your bifold survey is essential.

Some properties already have an existing opening if the customer is replacing patio doors and installing the bifolds into this spot. For other projects, like home extensions or renovations, we may need to measure for bifolds in a new space, giving building contractors the accurate information they require to plan the build.

But how do you measure for bifolds? Let’s take a look.

How do you measure the height of new bifolds?

The height of bifolds depends on the lower frame’s design, which is something your bifold expert will talk to you about when they complete your survey. For example, you can choose from different threshold options, including solutions which are flush to the floor or have a low threshold for easy access where the track is slightly raised. If you require wheelchair access or are concerned about the door height, we’ll find suitable bifold customisations for your needs.

How do you choose the width of bifolds?

If you have an existing aperture, its width will determine your choice of doors. Smaller openings can still have French bifolds installed if you love the style. With larger opening widths, you can have more panes, which fold back to one or both sides of the frame. Your surveyor will show you the different options you can have in the space. More panels mean more sightlines, but it’s about the look and functionality you want and need.

Should you choose inward or outward opening bifolds?

Choosing inward or outward stacking bifolds is an important decision. Outward stacking panels give you more interior floor space to put furniture near the doors, but the bifolds will be more exposed to the elements when secured back outside. If access is something you need to consider, you can split the configuration. This will place a single door on one end that opens and shuts normally while moving the other panels to the side when you want the bifolds fully open.

How do professionals measure for bifolds?

When measuring for bifolds, the dimensions we take will have a certain amount of tolerance. This is to ensure the bifold doors will fit into the opening at the point of installation, but the difference is no more than a centimetre. We’ll also survey your walls to check if they’re strong enough to hold the glass, especially if corner bifolds are the preferred choice. Once we’ve confirmed the height and width of your new bifolds, we’ll order them.
